The Ionian Coast
The Ionian coast has three centers- Catania, Messina and Taormina, and it is a well-develooped tourist area. Also, Catania and Messina are centers of business and trade, and their economic developments set them apart from the remainder of the island.
The Ionian coast has a few must-see tourist destinations for those visiting Sicily, such as the highest volcano in Europe, Mt. Etna, the town of Taormina, and many other wonderful places that attract thousands of visitors every year. The coast offers breathtaking views, buildings crafted from lava stone, pristine beaches and bays, and many, many vineyards.
Ever in the background is Mt. Etna, and the Ionian coast offers a beautiful view of its peak. Mt. Etna National Park also has a panoramic view of the volcano as it emits puffs of smoke.
Messina's tourist sites have always been an important part of what the city is. Messina was founded by Messenian colonists from Greece, and it is located in the midst of the Mediterranean. Caught between Sicily and Naples, Messina has been a popular meeting spot for centuries. Over the years, Messina has been home to Arabs, Armenians, Jews and other people from Europe's large seaside cities. The city was vital in the Spanish revolt of 1674-78, but after that revolt was over, it gradually fell into disrepair.
